Two Malaysian engineers held in China over theft

PENANG: Two Malaysian engineers have been arrested in China over the theft of RM14mil worth of Certificates of Authenticity (CoA) labels from a multinational company.

The men, aged 31 and 33, were nabbed on Sept 22 in Guiyang, Guizhou, by the Chinese Interpol who tracked them down after months of investigations.

A Bukit Aman Interpol team would leave for China soon to bring back the two who used to work in a factory that assembles computers.

Investigations showed that they took more than 38,000 CoA labels out of the factory premises by tampering with the company’s requisition forms more than two years back. Each label is worth US$94 (RM354.52).

The duo had sold the labels – meant to certify as genuine the software in the laptops assembled at the factory – to a middleman.

Pirated software only costs a few ringgit while a genuine product could cost thousands.

When a CoA label is pasted on a computer with pirated software, it could be passed off as genuine and sold at a higher price.
