Government have multiple calls to other people like this one of Ong to SMEs: Focus on R&D and ICT.

A developed nation normally have institutions running the R&D, more so at universities and research centres established by the ruling government to lead the country into leading-edge technologies.

Where and how is Malaysian government effort on this part other than keep telling others to keep on R&D-ing!

Ong to SMEs: Focus on R&D and ICT

KUALA LUMPUR: Small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) should be aggressive in research and development and enhance their knowledge in information communications technology (ICT) so that they can be ahead of others, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.

He cited how homegrown companies such as YTL Berhad, Genting Berhad and IOI Berhad had used their creativity, knowledge and ideas to carve out new markets for themselves.

“Now we have to go beyond efficiency to spur the economy to the next level,” he said at the Golden Bull Award 2005 at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

A total of 111 SME players received the award presented by Nanyang Siang Pau and endorsed by the International Trade and Industry Ministry.

Ong said the recent trend in technology convergence had led to more opportunities for SMEs.

The application of ICT had not only created SMEs that were competitive in terms of price, quality, delivery and efficient services, but had also enabled them to respond to market demands and changes, he said.

“In this aspect, SMEs are encouraged to integrate into the global supply chain, especially in the high-end and high value-added activities currently outsourced by multinational companies and large corporations,” he added.
