Plant serai for extra cash, housewives urged

Housewives, especially those in villages in Johor, have been urged to plant fragrant lemon grass or serai wangi around their homes for some extra cash.

Johor Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said the plant had great economic potential both locally and in international markets.

She said the plant, which was easy to cultivate, was in demand in many sectors, including the perfume industry.

“During a recent visit to Europe, I was surprised to see a market in London selling fragrant lemon grass at RM77 per kilo.

BIG POTENTIAL: Dr Robia (centre) showing the fragrant lemon grass while holding an ointment made from the plant.
“I told myself the same plant only fetches RM1 in Malaysia and if women in Johor can plant it for export, they can make extra income,” she said after launching a JomKita Ke Ladang or Lets’ Go Farming programme in Sungai Balang on Saturday.

Dr Robia said she was told the fragrant lemon grass sold in London was imported from France, where it is used to produce perfume.

She said there also was demand for cili padi, garlic, onions and pandan wangi which women could plant in their house compounds.

She said the plants did not need daily care and women could harvest them within six to eight months, adding that the state Agriculture Department would provide the seedlings.

Dr Robia, who is also Sungai Balang representative, said the Department had made Sungai Balang the site of a pioneer project in the Lets’ Go Farming programme.

If the project succeeded, she said the department would extend the programme to other villages in the state and urged housewives and single mothers to spend free time growing the plants.
