Killed after taking his son away from in-law’s house

Murugiah: Had been living with a female companion.
JOHOR BARU: An ex-convict's desire to see his son appears to have cost him his life.

R. Murugiah, 29, had not seen his wife and children for about one-and-a-half years as he was in prison for a drug offence.

When he was released early last month, he moved into another house with a female companion and started work as a factory operator.

However, he missed his children. On Saturday, he went to his mother-in-law's home and took his eldest son, eight, back with him.

When his wife found out the next day, she marched to his house in Taman Mutiara, Ulu Tiram, argued with him and took her son back.

Just minutes after she left, three men rushed into the terrace house, sources said.

Murugiah and his companion locked themselves in the bathroom but the men broke down the door and allegedly beat him to death about 9pm on Sunday, they said.

Police have since arrested four people, including Murugiah's 25-year-old wife to assist in investigations.

They also seized an array of weapons including a stick, iron rod and helmet.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Roslan Ahmad confirmed the arrests and said investigations were under way.

All four suspects, aged between 23 and 58, have been remanded for eight days.
